Engcon's joysticks allow Örjan to continue working as a machinist

About six months ago Engcon received a request for help from Örjan Nordin, a machinist at EAG Entrepenad in Sweden. Örjan explained that he had so much pain in his hand joints that he was on sick leave. In June 2019, Örjan is back at full work, thanks to Engcon's ergonomic MIG2 joysticks.

Örjan had already read about Engcon's ergonomic joysticks and wondered if they would be so ergonomic that he would be able to work with his excavator again. The management of his employer EAG decided to give this a try. The old joysticks were removed and Engcon's ergonomic MIG2 joysticks were mounted in Örjan's excavator.

"At first I almost couldn't believe it, but after working with the MIG2 levers for a while, I no longer felt any pain in my wrists," Örjan says, when we visit him at a road construction site in the eastern province of Jämtland in Sweden.

Örjan says that before the levers were replaced, he was in constant pain, his fingers swelled to the point that his wedding ring had to be cut off, and he took painkillers regularly. In fact, it got so bad that he had to use special supports for his wrists. After his sick leave, Örjan could no longer work with the excavator, so he switched to a wheel loader with which he did not have to use his wrists as much.

"However, I missed my work with the excavator and when I asked my boss if maybe we could try Engcon's joysticks, to my great joy I immediately got his approval." explains Örjan who has worked as a machinist for more than 25 years.

In addition to the proportional control of the swivel tilt, Örjan also connected wheel steering to the MIG2 levers, and he particularly praises the support for the wrist on the outside of the levers. This means that he does not have to hold the handles as tightly during the outward movements of the levers.

In the spring of 2019, Örjan received a new excavator and there was no doubt about which levers would be mounted in this machine.

"Once again it was proven how good these MIG2 levers are. It took a while for the new joysticks to be installed, so I was temporarily working with another machine. The problems with my wrists returned immediately. If I had not gotten MIG2 levers in my new machine, I most likely would not have been able to work as a machinist."says Örjan.

Ergonomics is crucial for machinists

"Ergonomics and a comfortable workplace are important to avoid injury from excessive strain. Occupations that perform repetitive and monotonous movements during the working day are in the danger zone. I am pleased that Engcon focuses on ergonomics when developing new equipment. As an ergonomist, I support the importance Engcon places on improving the working environment and working day of machinists." says Johan Brännströrm, licensed physical therapist/ergonomist and business manager at health center Hälsorum in Sweden. "The Engcon MIG2 levers are an example of a product where repetitive and monotonous stress on hand joints has been taken into account. A good working environment and good tools are basic requirements for minimizing the risk of pain and other health problems."

Facts about the MIG2:

MIG2 are Engcon's ergonomic handles for excavators. In addition to the ergonomic design, these handles have a wrist rest that facilitates outward movement of the handle. One joystick can be equipped with up to 3 stepless thumb rolls for controlling, for example, a rotary tilt or other functions. In addition, it is possible to connect forward and reverse wheel or track controls and up to 7 on/off buttons. MIG2 works well with Engcon's proportional control system DC2.
