The transportation and logistics sector faces a major challenge: becoming more sustainable without compromising efficiency, reliability, or affordability. A good example of this is the electrification project at Macharis Transport. The transportation company recently invested in electric trucks, taking an important step toward low-emission transportation. But electric driving only becomes truly viable when vehicles can be charged in an affordable and smart way. That is why significant investments were made in the existing energy infrastructure on the site.

To maximize the self-consumption of its own solar power, Ecoveld installed a battery pack with a capacity of 300 kW and a storage capacity of 645 kWh. This battery stores excess solar energy and makes it available later for charging the electric trucks. This ensures that the vehicles have maximum access to self-generated green energy. The result: a significantly lower cost per kilometer and a more sustainable transportation model that remains economically viable.

Underground drilling

The project required a well-thought-out approach. A guided underground drilling operation was needed to connect the battery pack. This allowed the necessary infrastructure to be installed without disrupting the flow of traffic on the site. For a logistics company, where every movement counts, this is crucial.

In addition, the battery is controlled and managed by an intelligent energy management system. This system predicts energy production, consumption, and charging needs, and controls the battery at the right time. This ensures that green energy is used as efficiently as possible and helps better accommodate peak power demands.

An additional benefit is that the battery provides extra power to the site. Since the grid operator was unable to increase the grid connection capacity, the battery offers a practical alternative here. This project thus demonstrates that battery systems are not only beneficial for self-consumption but also provide a solution in areas where grid congestion is becoming a growing problem.

Peak Times

The concept remains valuable even in winter. The battery can charge at night or during periods of lower energy demand, and then deliver the high power needed during peak times.

In addition to battery storage and energy management, the right charging infrastructure plays a key role. Ecoveld looks at the big picture: from electrical panels, cabling, and power management to charging stations for heavy-duty vehicles.
