RFID lock from igus prevents unauthorized access to connections on the cable caterpillar
In many industrial plants, unwanted or unintentional tampering with connector connections can lead to downtime or increased service costs. Especially affected are the connection points of cable tracks. To further protect these points in the future, igus presents a new RFID solution for the modular Module Connect plug-in system.
A food manufacturer's packaging line suddenly stops working. Under stress, the operator tries to find a solution. He disconnects the connector connections of the cable caterpillar, even though he is not technically authorized to do so, causing further damage. “Such interventions are a serious and expensive problem in many companies, as they lead to downtime and costly service calls,” says Sebastiaan Koelewijn, product manager of readychain and readycable at igus. “Many companies therefore want a simple way to better secure sensitive connections. With the RFID lock, we offer for the first time a solution that can be retrofitted and addresses exactly this problem.” igus developed the add-on specifically for the Module Connect cable rupture connector connection. The lock snaps onto the existing Module Connect interface and can only be opened with an authorized RFID card. Initial feedback from conversations with customers has been positive, mainly because of its uncomplicated integration into existing systems.
The RFID lock consists of a flat housing and is assembled without tools. A metal clevis pin reliably locks the connector connection. An integrated microcomputer verifies that an authorized RFID card is present. If necessary, each access can be logged, which is useful for maintenance, documentation and quality processes and provides greater transparency during operation.
The modular Module Connect plug-in system allows different cables - from bus and power cables to fiber optic cables and pneumatic hoses - to be bundled into one clear interface. Instead of connecting many individual connectors, the result is an uncluttered module that can be connected in one step. In this way, companies can shorten assembly time by as much as 80% and significantly reduce fault causes. The time savings are due to the contact elements that can be clicked into the housing without tools. Different enclosures can be flexibly combined to create a customized interface. A single plug connects the entire system, allowing numerous cables - about 16 or more - to be securely attached with just one movement. Error assignments and mix-ups are virtually eliminated, significantly reducing documentation effort. The flat, space-saving housing also allows high contact density and is ideal for compact machine rooms. Several cables are brought together in one module instead of through many separate connectors. Each enclosure can be equipped with up to four electrical, optical or pneumatic inserts, meaning that the system can be configured extremely flexibly. Thanks to completely tool-free assembly, conversions and expansions can be carried out easily and quickly. Power, data and media cables are clearly structured and converge at a central transfer point, making the modular concept ideal for both small machines and large systems.
