Extensive testing shows: unloading is 15 minutes faster, 50% less staff required, 20% fewer sick days, and 80% less lifting strain.

DPD Netherlands is making a major investment in ergonomic handling solutions from Schmalz. In doing so, the logistics company is transforming its hubs into a showcase of ergonomic innovation: container unloading is 15% faster, physical strain is reduced by 80%, and sick leave has decreased by 20%. A concrete example that demonstrates how ergonomic handling and innovation have a real impact on workplace safety, health, and operational efficiency.

DPD Netherlands sets itself apart in a competitive market by investing in the health and safety of its employees.

With 19 Destuff-it™ units, container unloading at DPD’s 15% hubs in the Netherlands is faster, while requiring only half the normal workforce. This not only results in cost savings but also provides greater flexibility in workforce planning and improves employee utilization.

Lars Kobesen, Project Manager at DPD Netherlands: “The Destuff-it™ has fundamentally changed the way we unload containers. We unload 15 minutes faster, but most importantly, we can deploy our team more effectively and experience fewer absences due to injuries. That’s the real value.”

In addition to Destuff-it™, 17 JumboFlex lifting aids are used on the conveyor belt at the Vijfhuizen distribution center to assist employees in sorting and placing heavy packages on carts. The systems reduce physical strain by 80%, which has a direct impact on workplace safety and employee health. This results in 20% fewer sick days. This figure reflects more than just savings on absenteeism; it demonstrates the actual health benefits for employees.

Schmalz assisted DPD in selecting the right solutions for its specific hub operations. The company not only supplied equipment but also provided expertise and guidance during the testing phase.

Joep van der Pol, Sales and Technical Advisor at Schmalz: “DPD’s case study demonstrates what motivates us: making work easier and safer. With Destuff-it™ and JumboFlex, we not only reduce physical exertion, but we also prove that innovation and improving working conditions go hand in hand.”

The first Destuff-it™ is now operational in Vijfhuizen. The rollout of the remaining 18 units will take place from November 2026 through March 2027.

This project highlights a growing trend in the logistics sector: companies are realizing that investments in ergonomic automation not only increase efficiency but are also a crucial factor in retaining employees and reducing absenteeism due to injuries.
