Podcast Series Between the Theses: Innovation, safety and automation as keys to success

Warehouse & Logistics has launched a new podcast series: Between the Theses. In this series, host Ferdi den Bakker talks with experts from the field about current topics within intralogistics. The first three episodes have now appeared and offer insights on cable technology, safety and automation. The podcasts can be listened to online via our website and on Spotify.

In the first episode, host Ferdi den Bakker speaks with Pascal de Vries of cable specialist LAPP about the crucial role of cable and connection systems in automated warehouses. "The speed and dynamics within modern intralogistics require reliable and flexible cable solutions," states De Vries. Cables are no longer just passive components, but active links in the logistics process.

In doing so, LAPP focuses on low-maintenance and sustainable solutions that help prevent downtime. One notable development is the integration of data and power transmission into a single system, providing a lean and efficient infrastructure. According to De Vries, customization is essential: "We work closely with customers to develop systems that fit their specific applications and environments."

According to De Vries, innovation and cooperation within the industry are indispensable to respond to the rapidly changing demands of the market. His message is clear: in a time of increasing automation, cable systems are not an afterthought, but a determining factor for efficiency and continuity.

Security as an integral part of the logistics process

In episode two, Robin Joosen of Axelent joins us. He discusses the balance between safety and workability in logistics environments. "The focus on safety is growing, partly due to staff shortages and the consequences of accidents," says Joosen. Incidents involving forklifts are a recurring problem, with damage often not just material.

Axelent is seeing a growing demand for plastic collision protection, machine guarding and fall prevention. Plastic has the advantage that it absorbs energy and does less damage than steel. Safety measures are easier to integrate in new construction, according to Joosen, but existing buildings can also be adapted with smart solutions - think walkways with signaling or automatic gates.

Axelent's advice goes beyond just supplying products. Joosen: "We look at the big picture: how can we optimize the equipment and make it safer?" His appeal is clear: safety is not a bonus, but a necessary investment that protects people and machines and prevents downtime.

Automation with vision and guidance

The third episode focuses on automation, with Peter De Henau of SSI Schäfer as a guest. With increasing labor shortages, both in operations and engineering, there is growing pressure to automate. "But automating without a plan is counterproductive," warns De Henau. "Proper analysis of data and material flows is crucial before deploying technology."

The market today offers scalable and affordable solutions even for smaller companies. Still, expert guidance is necessary, De Henau believes. SSI Schäfer acts as integrator and advisor, with knowledge of different sectors and technologies. In doing so, he says it helps enormously to visit live reference projects: "It prevents companies from getting lost in the forest of possibilities."

The Henau emphasizes the importance of a technology-independent approach. Only then can companies choose a solution that truly fits their processes.
