Lineas, Europe's largest private rail freight operator, and chemical company Evonik announce the relaunch of a strategic train connection in the port of Antwerp. Since mid-November 2024, this train connects Evonik's production sites in the Port of Antwerp with Lineas' Mainhub terminal on a weekly basis. Here there is also a seamless connection to the LoRo (Left Bank-Right Bank) and RoRo (Right Bank-Right Bank) connections, further increasing transport efficiency.
This Intraport connection was initially started in 2008, but was discontinued in 2022 and replaced by road transport. By reviving the connection now, Evonik is opting not only for reducing the number of trucks on the road, but also for a conscious modal shift to rail. This sustainable alternative not only reduces congestion, but also brings greater efficiency and reliability as well as a lower carbon footprint.
The new connection takes 5,700 trucks off the road every year. Technological innovations and accurate planning also enable rail transport to be an alternative to road transport and deliver goods at the right speed. This makes rail a viable and smart link in the modern supply chain, even in complex port environments.
Evonik emphasizes that this connection fits within their broader sustainability ambition. "With this connection, we show that rail transport is not only more sustainable, even when it comes to short-haul intermodal transport, but also fits perfectly with our vision to further optimize our supply chains," said Tim Mertens, Assistant Logistics Solutions at Evonik. "This project is an excellent example of how cooperation with the right partners can lead to impactful results."
Luc Pirenne, CCO of Lineas, added: "This project illustrates how rail transport can be an indispensable link in logistics strategies. Thanks to our shared vision, we have achieved a wonderful result: more sustainable and more efficient transport. We are proud of this cooperation with Evonik and hope that this also inspires other companies to take the step to rail."
