‘Modularity makes automation projects successful’
Modular automation has the advantage of making it easier to respond to busier periods, such as Black Friday, end-of-year peaks, and holidays.

‘Modularity makes automation projects successful’

Independent integrator Easy Systems sees that the choice for modularity in particular helps to achieve automation successes. Business developer Van Eyndhoven on the differences in motivations between logistics service providers and manufacturers: “A manufacturer is more likely to invest in a new machine and scale up production capacity, while a logistics service provider is more likely to respond flexibly to demand from potential customers.”

Large and small projects

Based on experience and a combination of systems, Easy Systems supports companies in both categories with modular solutions. “We have secured a large number of projects. Speaking of large, sometimes it is better to keep a project small and the ROI low. For example, by opting for smaller steps in automation. A limited Opex budget of a few hundred thousand euros is also easier to achieve.”

By thinking in terms of modularity, a company already makes itself more flexible.

‘Not always a big adjustment’

The main drivers for manufacturing companies are found in the area of linking existing machines together. “And adding a form of automation, such as a palletizer. This improves ergonomics and may even eliminate a task for an operator. A robot can handle quite a lot and can sometimes even be used on two lines.”

More flexible thanks to modularity

For logistics service providers, the main drivers are flexibility and cost savings. “When we talk about flexibility, we mean being able to respond quickly to the needs of new customers. By thinking in terms of modularity, you already make yourself more flexible. If your company then acquires a new customer, you can still decide which automation to add and then scale up.” The business developer sees a lot of interest in conveyor systems, simplifying work at packing tables, and things like automatic box closers and desnaring machines. “With the latter, you leave the person at the packing table. What's more, this is ergonomic, because dragging heavy packages is no longer necessary.”

Critical view

According to Van Eyndhoven, automation, especially when it is modular, has another advantage: “It allows companies to respond better to busier periods, such as Black Friday, end-of-year peaks, and holidays. A critical eye from an independent integrator can help with this. Automation can be smart, but you have to make sure you are addressing real challenges, not creating new problems.”
