Thanks to smart systems where hardware and data come together, the loading dock changes from a physical gateway to an intelligent hub for logistics management. “The loading dock of the future consists of mechanical systems combined with real-time data collection. This data can be used for a host of valuable functions that help increase security, more efficient operations and control costs. In the future, this way of working is here to stay,” emphasizes Ron Waleveld, business development manager at ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems.

ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems is working on that future every day. On the one hand, by developing innovative entrance solutions that enhance security and ensure the smooth and safe flow of people and goods. On the other by providing the ASSA ABLOY Insight digital platform, where an intuitive interface transforms door data into actionable insights. This platform improves operational efficiency, performance and energy consumption, among other things.

The Insight platform makes data-driven decisions easy with key performance indicators such as errors, alerts and usage rates. A digital dashboard shows which docks are occupied or free, how often they are used and which doors are closed or open. “With Insight, companies not only see the status in real time, but they can also improve the efficiency of their docks. Say you find with Insight that Dock 21 is being used much more often than Dock 3, you can adjust your scheduling accordingly and better distribute transport flows. This can lead to more transport movements, but also increase security. After all, the busier a dock, the greater the chance of errors.

ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems“ developments include the Dock-IN security system, which consists of a combination of sensors and LED lighting. ”Dock-IN LED lighting guides the driver when docking and the dock door can only be opened when the truck is actually in front of it,“ explains Waleveld. ”This prevents unsafe situations and increases the reliability of the loading process."

Waleveld explains that more efficient use of the docks also optimizes service processes. “Data shows what is really happening. This also allows you to schedule maintenance better and avoid unexpected costs. In the example I just gave, Dock 21 will need maintenance earlier than planned due to more intensive use. The Insight platform will give you an alert for this. But quotes, maintenance history and invoices are also tracked in this environment. As well as a clear cost overview to predict annual expenses. This gives companies a grip on their expenses and prevents surprises. In addition, it is very practical that the Insight platform provides access to essential door data such as the model, troubleshooting manuals, usage and statistics on door opening time and so on. Data-driven work not only makes the loading dock smarter, but in fact lifts the entire operation to a higher level,” concludes Waleveld.
