Volvo will supply 20 heavy-duty electric trucks to Amazon

Volvo Trucks will deliver all-electric heavy trucks to Amazon in Germany by the end of the year. The 20 Volvo FH Electric are expected to cover more than one million road miles annually, powered by electricity instead of diesel.

Heavy trucks and other commercial vehicles account for about 36% of Germany's domestic transport emissions, making decarbonization of road transport a major issue to be addressed.

"Major players in the transportation industry play an important role in leading the industry's efforts to reduce its Co2 footprint. That is why I am pleased that Amazon is working with us to help reduce their emissions in longer and heavier transports," said Jessica Sandström, Senior Vice President Product Management at Volvo Trucks.

Volvo Trucks began series production of heavy-duty electric trucks in September of this year, and the availability of electric trucks for interurban and regional transport is an important milestone for decarbonizing road transport.

"Globally, we now have six electric truck models ready for order and in series production to meet the increasing demand for decarbonizing freight transport. This is an encouraging step forward to mitigate the effects of climate change," said Jessica Sandström.

The electric versions of the main product range - the heavy-duty Volvo FH, FM and FMX trucks - will play a vital role in achieving Volvo's global goal that by 2030 50% of all new Volvo trucks sold will be battery or fuel cell electric. These electric heavy-duty trucks can handle a total weight of 44 tons. The FH, FM and FMX represent two-thirds of Volvo's global sales.

For Amazon, the trucks will replace their diesel counterparts and play a key role in electrification initiatives through its transportation supply chain.

"Amazon wants to decarbonize its fleet, and the middle mile is a sector that is difficult to decommission," explained Andreas Marschner, Vice President of Transportation Services Europe at Amazon. "That's why the inclusion of these electric trucks from Volvo in our fleet is such an important milestone. We have one of the fastest growing commercial transportation electrification programs and we continue to invest and innovate to decarbonize packages and deliver them to customers emission-free."
