What is CO2 offsetting in pump rental

What is carbon offsetting?

Carbon offsetting is a global program to offset the carbon emissions that inevitably occur in today's society. Offset schemes allow companies to invest in environmental projects around the world to offset their own environmental footprint. The projects are usually carried out in developing countries and are mostly designed to reduce emissions in the future. They may include projects such as clean energy technologies or establishing new forestry projects.

How does carbon offsetting work in pump rentals?

Gorman-Rupp knows exactly how much CO2 a diesel-powered pump produces during operation*. When a rental pump is returned, the number of operating hours it has been used determines the total amount of CO2 produced during the rental period. This amount of CO2 is offset through selected projects, making your rental pump CO2 neutral. When you return your rental pump, you will receive a certificate from Gorman-Rupp. This certificate refers to the rental pump and the amount of CO2 you have offset in this project. You can use this certifi cate towards your client to show your responsibility.

What does carbon offsetting cost me?

The good news is that the CO2 offset program will not result in higher rental rates. Gorman-Rupp takes its social responsibility seriously, which is why we invest in carbon offset programs at no additional cost to our customers. Thus, there are no barri res for our customers to participate in these sustainability programs.

Is carbon offsetting the solution to our environmental challenges?

The answer to this question is very simple and honest; no, it is not. The real solution lies in the ongoing development of new innovations that will eventually lead to technologies n that produce no CO2 at all. At the same time, the world around us is using common technologies n that still produce emissions, and it is our responsibility to minimize their lasting effects. One effective way to do this is with CO2 offsets. Gorman-Rupp therefore sees it as a very effi ci ent intermediate step, on the way to a fully sustainable rental fleet.

* We know the CO2 emissions of each diesel-powered pump at peak power. In reality, rental pumps rarely run at their maximum power, so CO2 emissions will be lower during the rental period. Nevertheless, we calculate the max CO2 emissions from each rental period at peak power, effectively offsetting more CO2 than what you actually produced. This way, you can always be confident that you have a completely CO2 neutral rental pump.

How foolproof is this program?

Gorman-Rupp partners with Climatrade, an international organization specializing in large carbon offset programs. Their special blockchain technology ensures total transparency and traceability. Second, the projects in which we offset CO2 are closely monitored according to the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) standard. Under CDM, projects are audited by third-party auditors and reviewed, approved/rejected by a CDM board. CDM requires strict compliance for certification of carbon offset projects and has been in operation since 2006.

What projects is Gorman-Rupp investing in?

Gorman-Rupp selected two projects to be used in the CO2 offset plan.

Biomass power plant Trupan Chile

The Trupan Biomass Power Plant project consists of the construction of a 30 MW biomass power plant at the Trupan Forestry Complex, located in Chile's Region VIII. The project uses biomass residues (sawdust and bark) from third-party sawmills as renewable fuel for the combined generation of heat and electricity. About half of the power generated is used on site, while the other half is fed back into the local grid. The project was implemented by Celulosa Arauco y Constituci n S.A., a leading forestry company headquartered in Chile, South America.

Oaxaca IV Mexico wind project

ACCIONA, one of the leading Spanish companies in the IBEX 35 and present in more than 40 countries, offers its expertise in designing a better planet, responding to the needs of infrastructure, water and energy through innovative and responsible solutions they generate real progress, based on an unusual and alternative way of doing business. This plant produces clean energy for about 700,000 homes, representing an annual emission reduction of 670,000 tons of CO2 eq in the atmosphere. This can be considered the equivalent of the sequestration of CO2 by a forest of 33.5 million trees.
