Efficiency and sustainability central to Antwerp Coordination Center
The official starting shot for the construction of the Antwerp Coordination Center (ACC) at the Zandvliet-Berendrecht lock was given today. This state-of-the-art coordination center, which will be operational from the end of 2026, will bring together all partners of the nautical chain and optimize the operation of the port. With a future-proof design that combines innovation and sustainability, the ACC will further put the port on the map as a leading world port.
The new ACC will be a recognizable landmark along the Scheldt River. This eight-story building, with a total floor area of 8,000 m² and a height of 46 meters, is located between the Zandvliet lock and the Berendrecht lock. It replaces the current coordination center from the 1970s, which no longer meets today's comfort requirements. With a flexible and modular structure prepared for future changes, it will be a central hub where teams such as vessel guidance, lock operators, pilotage and boatmen work closely together.
The common work floor of 1,000 m² optimizes communication and coordination within the nautical chain, essential for safe and smooth shipping traffic. The figures underscore the importance: in 2023, the port recorded 274,132 ship movements, an average of 761 per day or 31 per hour. The ACC plays a crucial role in managing this flow.
In addition to operational functions, the ACC offers training facilities, recreation rooms and a visitor space, as the external hub of the experience center Port World. Professional visitors will be taken through a guided tour of the nautical chain, with highlights including a glazed walkway overlooking the operational area and a panoramic terrace overlooking the harbor.
The Antwerp Coordination Center sets a new standard in terms of sustainability. The building is completely energy-neutral thanks to the use of ground energy, a sustainable system that extracts heat and cooling from the ground, and additional energy generation by solar panels. Through efficient energy conservation and innovative use of technology, the ACC requires no fossil fuels and emits no CO2.
Much attention has also been paid to circular and thoughtful use of materials, allowing raw materials to be used sustainably and reused. The building offers an optimal indoor climate with high-quality air quality, thermal and acoustic comfort, and uses green roofs, wadis and systems for rainwater buffering and reuse. With 10,000 m² of ecological outdoor space, the ACC contributes to biodiversity and minimizes its impact on the environment.
The ACC is a project of Port of Antwerp-Bruges and Maritime Services and Coast (MDK), realized by KAAN Architects, SVR-ARCHITECTS, contractor Van Roey, Van Roey Services and engineering firms Sweco/Blasco.
Construction of the ACC will be carried out in several phases. The center will be operational by the end of 2026, after which the current building will be demolished and the surrounding area landscaped.
Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO of Port of Antwerp-Bruges: "The Antwerp Coordination Center is not only an operational center, but also a symbol of innovation and sustainability. By combining and facilitating technology and cooperation, we strengthen the operation of our port and help build a future where people and nature are at the center."
Annick De Ridder, Flemish Minister of Mobility, Public Works, Ports and Sport: "It is unique to bring so many nautical partners together under one roof. This building promotes cooperation, shortens communication lines and reflects how Flanders is a maritime pioneer. Flanders will continue to support ports to strengthen their competitive position, but also to be beacons of safety, technology and sustainability."
Johan Klaps, port alderman: "The new Antwerp Coordination Center will not only be a very recognizable and handsome landmark along all of us on the Scheldt; it will also be a paragon of sustainability and innovation. This state-of-the-art coordination center will bring together all partners in the nautical chain and will also serve as an external hub for Havenwereld, the port experience center. In short, with the ACC we literally show that our port is one with great ambitions."
Bram Vandenboom, general manager Van Roey: "We are extremely proud to be able to work with our architects and consultants to design and construct this unique building. For 20 years, Van Roey Services will also be responsible for all facilities management, technical and structural maintenance."
