Sealoflex PMB, durable asphalt binders

Sustainability and energy transition. Much discussed topics, also in GWW. Sustainability starts with life extension. That is the opinion of Roger Vrijman, director at BituNed.

"The properties of asphalt can be significantly improved when conventional bitumen is replaced by polymer-modified bitumen (PMB)," says Vrijman. With Sealoflex PMB, BituNed puts an asphalt binder on the market which fits into the sustainability of the GWW sector.

Longer lifespan

In recent decades, changing contract forms have led to PMB being used more and more, Vrijman notes, attributing this to the requirements set in terms of longer life spans. "In fact, already a sustainability improvement," he states. "The Life Cycle Costs become significantly lower as a result."

Savings on primary raw materials

"The application of Sealoflex PMB makes it possible to achieve layer thickness reduction (30-50%) of the various asphalt layers. With the help of mathematical models, a constant service life can be guaranteed, with significant savings on primary raw materials and realization costs," observes Vrijman.

Low Temperature Variants

Lower CO2 emissions, reduced emissions in production and processing and savings in energy consumption have been the direct reason for the development of Sealoflex PMB LT. "From 2019 Low Temperature variants will be applied more widely in practice, the binders have at least the same properties as the regular Sealoflex PMBs. Projects have been realized in extensive consultation with several contractors in Oldenzaal and 's-Hertogenbosch, among others," Vrijman explains. "We combine proven quality in practice with contemporary sustainability requirements."

Reuse

Asphalt is a building material ideally suited for reuse. "With the Bio-Recycling product line, we are committed to using high percentages of PR. From BASE to D-ZOAB. Several validation processes are now in the completion phase." By using a unique process technology, 95% of the various Sealoflex PMB can be delivered from stock. Vrijman concludes, "We are thus responding to the flexibility desired in the market."
