Renault Trucks is continuing its investment in electric mobility. From 2023, an all-electric Renault Trucks range will be available for each segment, particularly distribution, construction and long-distance transport. To support these developments and offer the most complete and competitive range on the market, the company is creating a department dedicated to electric mobility. Thus, Renault Trucks confirms its commitment to transport without fossil fuels.
To help meet the Paris Climate Agreement target of limiting global warming to less than 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels, Renault Trucks aims to transform the truck market. It is doing this by reducing the share of internal combustion engines and gradually electrifying its fleet to become carbon neutral within 30 years. Because trucks have a lifespan of at least 10 years, none of the trucks the manufacturer puts on the market in 2040 will run on fossil fuels. Electricity will be the dominant factor in this major transformation toward carbon-free transportation.
In March 2020, Renault Trucks began producing its second generation of electric vehicles at the Blainville-sur-Orne plant. The French manufacturer now has the most complete all-electric range on the market, ranging from 3.1 to 26 tons. With the Renault Trucks D Z.E., D Wide Z.E. and the Renault Trucks Master Z.E., it meets urban transport, delivery, distribution and waste collection requirements.
But Renault Trucks wants to expand vehicle electrification for all possible applications. The manufacturer is preparing to market a Z.E. tractor from 2023 to meet the needs of regional and interregional transport. An all-electric range for urban environments will also be available by that date. From 2025, Renault Trucks will be able to offer a segment on fuel cells, mainly for long-haul use.
"Electric mobility is the pillar of our strategy and we want to lead the way", said Bruno Blin, President of Renault Trucks. "We aim to make 10% of our sales electric by 2025 and 35% by 2030. By 2040, all our vehicle ranges will be 100% free of fossil fuels."
To achieve its objectives, Renault Trucks is supported by specialized departments, both in terms of R&D (research and development) and sales and after-sales organization.
In terms of R&D, Renault Trucks plans to meet the main technological challenges of this revolution through strategic partnerships, as well as by relying on synergies within the Volvo Group, of which it is a part, to increase volumes and reduce costs.
To offer transporters the best electric mobility solutions, Renault Trucks will be able to rely on the new development unit within the Volvo Group dedicated to medium-duty vehicles, a key segment for the phased introduction of electric mobility for trucks. Renault Trucks will also benefit from the partnerships developed by Volvo Energy, the Group's new entity the Group's new entity dealing with battery supply, second life and recycling, as well as charging solutions. As for the development of battery packs specifically for trucks, the Volvo Group will be able to benefit from the strategic alliance with Samsung SDI.
To enable this sustainable transition, Renault Trucks will also have the support of its new R&D center in Lyon, the X-Tech Arena, which will be built by early 2023 through an investment of 33 million euros.
Regarding the marketing of its Z.E. range and customer support, Renault Trucks has created a new entity responsible for electric mobility projects to increase both operational efficiency and customer satisfaction. This team has vast experience and is working hard to establish partnerships involving all stakeholders (transport companies, distributors, public authorities, energy suppliers, etc.). This allows us to offer carriers a smart and competitive value-added electric driving range.
Finally, Renault Trucks has included services in its vehicle offerings to make life easier for customers looking for the best solution for their activity. In addition to the vehicle itself, Renault Trucks offers a comprehensive transport package. This includes batteries and solutions for installing charging facilities on customer premises, energy optimization, repair and maintenance, financing and insurance. Aiming to make life easier for its customers, Renault Trucks strives to be the manufacturer that promises peace of mind. In this period of great change and uncertainty, that is undoubtedly what hauliers need most.
