Record order for Volvo electric trucks

DFDS, Northern Europe's largest logistics provider, has ordered 100 Volvo FM Electric. The deal is the largest commercial order to date for Volvo electric trucks and one of the largest ever for heavy-duty electric trucks worldwide.

"This is an important milestone in our commitment to fossil-free transportation and I am very proud of the partnership we have with DFDS. Together we are showing the world that heavy electric transport is already a viable solution today. I believe this will encourage even more customers to confidently take the first step in their own electrification journey," said Roger Alm, President Volvo Trucks.

First deliveries of the Volvo FM Electric to DFDS will begin in the fourth quarter of 2022 and continue through 2023. The trucks will be used for both local and longer-distance transport in DFDS' logistics system in Europe.

"At DFDS, we are committed to playing our part in reducing CO2-emissions and creating a sustainable supply chain. We know how important electrification is to our CO2-goals and I hope we can inspire others in this crucial transformation," explained Niklas Andersson, Executive Vice President and Head of Logistics Division at DFDS.

The Volvo FM Electric is designed for a GCW of up to 44 tons (gross combination weight) and has a range of up to 300 km. By recharging, for example, during drivers' mandatory rest periods, the range can be increased. The vehicles can be charged both overnight at depots (each truck comes with an AC charger) and fast charging on the road (DC charging). DFDS has chosen a financing solution from Volvo Financial Services.

Breakthrough for electric trucks in Europe

The number of electric trucks in Europe is increasing. So far this year, for example, several hundred electric trucks over 16 tons have been registered. About 40 percent of these are Volvo electric trucks.

"Our goal is to drive the transformation to electric trucks and our market leadership position shows that we are definitely on the right track. Our goal for 2030 is that half of our global truck deliveries will be electric. We are delighted to see that the growing interest from our customers is starting to reflect itself in firm orders, not least through this impressive order from DFDS," said Roger Alm.

Volvo Trucks became one of the first truck manufacturers to start series production of electric trucks in 2019. The product range now includes six electric truck models - the Volvo FH, Volvo FM, Volvo FMX, Volvo FE, Volvo FL and the Volvo VNR, sold in North America.
