Whereas for years the optimization of supply chain processes focused primarily on warehouses and transportation, the ‘yard’ - the outside area of logistics centers and industrial sites - often remained underexposed. Yet more efficient management of this area can yield significant cost reductions. This is why LogiVille is launching a new Thematour: Yards with Brains.
“At distribution centers, yard costs represent an average of 12% of total operating costs. In container or ro-ro terminals, this rises as high as 30%.”, says Paul Van Nuffel, manager of LogiVille. “Those costs arise from long wait times, underutilization of capacity, inefficient turnaround times and unsafe situations.”

According to Van Nuffel, the yard today is often the least digitized link in the supply chain. “However, digitization of management can lead to major cost reductions. For example, implementing a Yard Management System (YMS) can increase productivity by as much as 25% and improve turnaround times and dock utilization by up to 40%.”
A YMS is the bridge between TMS (Transport Management System) and WMS (Warehouse Management System), but is only one of the technologies that can replace manual control of yards. Other solutions include smart access control and lock booking, real-time tracking, predictive AI tools, autonomous terminal tractors, inspection drones and advanced safety and security systems.

During the theme tour at LogiVille, a dozen companies will present market-ready innovations in four areas:
From March 11 to June 30, 2026, companies can discover these innovative solutions and experience how yards are evolving into smart and future-oriented environments. Registration is available through the website of LogiVille.
