Multidisciplinary project

The major maintenance of Roode Vaart lock in Moerdijk is right up Van der Straaten Aannemingsmaatschappij's alley. "We can make full use of our technical knowledge and expertise in such multidisciplinary contracts," says head of realization Richard Goetheer. 

"Waterschap Brabantse Delta only named the functional requirements in the contract with the goal of extending the life span for the next 30 years. It was up to us to fulfill this.

The work ranges from concrete repairs and the installation of handrails and fencing to the replacement of the guardrails and the inspection and renovation of the lock gates. Ultimately, we must renovate and modify the lock in such a way that a CE mark can again be issued for the property."

Surely the biggest challenge for Van der Straaten, according to Goetheer, was the tight schedule. "Especially for the lift door, it was important that it had to be put back in place before the storm season started (October 1). We only had six weeks to renovate the lift door. For the fan doors, we performed a visual inspection and 3D scan. These doors will be renovated at a later stage. The great thing is that almost all of the work involved was engineered in-house and also carried out by our own people. That of course makes it extra special."
