Joystick with tactile feedback - a new dimension in communication

The elobau vibration module for joysticks allows operators to handle machines more safely and efficiently thanks to tactile feedback.

The new vibration module from elobau offers machine and vehicle manufacturers a way to respond to operators' tactile sensory systems. The module is compatible with the Heavy Duty joystick J4F and the modular midi armrest 225MA. The module is integrated into the 361G/362G and 341G/342G multifunction handles.

The operator of a mobile machine is exposed to a lot of noise and visual impressions, all of which he must filter or process. Loud engine noises, flashing warning lights, displays and a hectic and dusty work environment take their toll and are taxing on both the acoustic and visual sensory systems. All while the machine operator tries to concentrate on his actual work. However, tactile perception, i.e., the sensitivity of the skin surface to touch and other sensations, is barely addressed.

The new vibration module from elobau takes advantage of this potential to optimize human-machine interaction, thereby increasing efficiency and safety in the operation of mobile machines. Using certain vibration patterns, high-quality tactile feedback can be generated, making human-machine communication more efficient. The amount of information transmitted can be significantly increased compared to simple, sporadic knock signals. Vibration effects make operation more intuitive and reduce the time required to master a machine. The risks of incorrect operation are also reduced. Improved operator comfort increases stamina and concentration, which also contributes to safe operation.

There are many ways in which vibration patterns can be used to communicate with the operator. For example, prompts or warnings provided by the vibration module can help speed reaction times. The support provided by haptic feedback guides the operator through his tasks. This improves both the efficiency and accuracy of their work.

The vibration motor is controlled via the CAN Bus by an electronic module and can generate a variety of vibration characteristics. Manufacturers can use the CAN protocol to define various parameters, such as intensity, duration or number of vibrations. These parameters generate characteristic vibration effects that are tailored to the application and, above all, can be understood intuitively.

Different vibration effects can indicate an overload situation or an emergency stop. They can also be used to confirm that automatic workflows have been completed. In addition, vibrations can indicate the proximity of nearby objects, the position of one's machine or when the configured limits of the working range are approached. They can generate vibrations that decrease in length as the operator approaches a foreign object, in a similar way to remote parking control systems used in automobiles. This is a useful alternative to audible warning signals in the often noisy environment of many workplaces. Functions such as fatigue alarms or detection of nearby pipelines are conceivable.

The new elobau vibration module is an additional option in the range of human-machine communication devices for manufacturers of mobile machines and systems. Vibration alarms and tactile feedback can be used in a variety of ways, opening up new possibilities for optimizing safe and efficient work processes. The vibration module is now available.
