With fifteen years of experience in logistics across Europe and the Middle East, Robin Vermaat knows better than anyone how to help companies grow in an international context. Based in Abu Dhabi, he guides organizations in warehousing, freight forwarding and supply chain optimization - always with a fresh perspective.
“I started in sales in the transportation sector, but soon the strategic side of logistics attracted me more,” Vermaat says. “In recent years I have worked with a variety of companies, from start-ups to large international players.” After years in permanent employment, Vermaat consciously chose a role as a consultant. “Consultancy gives me the space to use my network, knowledge and experience flexibly with companies that really want to move forward,” he says. “I'm not tied to one organization or structure, which allows me to move faster and make an impact.”
His move to Abu Dhabi was a combination of business and personal ambitions. “The logistics market in the Gulf region is growing tremendously, with lots of room for innovation. It felt like the perfect opportunity to develop myself internationally, both business-wise and culturally.”
According to Vermaat, Dutch logistics is very mature and structured. “Everything here is optimized, regulated and efficient. In the Gulf region, on the contrary, there is a lot of room for growth and improvisation. The pace is fast, ambitions are high, and there is more willingness to think out-of-the-box.”
Still, the region has challenges. “The balance between vision and implementation is sometimes difficult. There are wonderful plans, but the translation into operational efficiency and well-trained personnel can lag behind. Moreover, dependence on import logistics makes the region vulnerable.”
In terms of innovation, Vermaat sees many experiments in the Middle East with autonomous vehicles, smart ports and blockchain solutions. “The Netherlands is precisely ahead in the field of sustainability and circular logistics.” In Abu Dhabi, green logistics is still in its infancy, but he expects a strong acceleration in the coming years, thanks in part to government initiatives such as Masdar and Net Zero 2050. “Decision-making here is more hierarchical and can take longer. Relationships and trust are more important than getting straight to the point,” Vermaat says. “In the Netherlands, communication is more direct and rational.”
One project he looks back on with pride is coaching a logistics scale-up in Oman. “Together we developed a commercial strategy, built partner networks and implemented digital tools. Within a year, their footprint doubled in the region.” His workdays are dynamic. “I often start early with calls with European customers, then I visit partners in Abu Dhabi or Dubai. In between, I work on strategies, presentations and project direction. And yes, sometimes I just sit in traffic to a meeting in a freezone,” he laughs.
For the future, Vermaat sees a greater role for AI and data-driven decision-making. “In the Netherlands sustainability remains leading, in the Middle East digitalization and infrastructure development are the spearheads.” He himself wants to further expand RV Consultancy as a bridge builder between Europe and the Gulf region. He does not rule out a return to the Netherlands.
“Dare to jump,” concludes Vermaat. “Learn languages, immerse yourself in cultures and step out of your comfort zone. Don't be put off by what you don't know yet - you'll learn that along the way.”
