After years of consultation with various maritime stakeholders, major work on the service port, part project of Nieuwe Sluis Terneuzen, will start this week. In two years (late 2021) the service port with building in Buitenhaven West can be put into use. The port will be 385 meters long and at its widest 95 meters.
The service port will soon be used for maritime service providers with a direct connection to the Terneuzen lock complex. In addition to the service port, a service building and surrounding roads will also be constructed. The new site is conveniently located to the New Lock when ready.
The service port will include a building and berths for the Royal Military Police, Boluda (formerly Kotug) and Muller Maritime Holding. The vessels of these parties will be moored in the service port. Rijkswaterstaat has the Nautical Center Terneuzen at the same location.
Preparatory work for the construction of the service port is in full swing. The construction site on the Long Middle Harbor Dam has been laid out, soil has been moved and the driveway has been modified so that the work traffic for the construction site and the traffic controllers who have to go to the traffic center do not cross each other. This week we will start vibrating the new combi wall. We will start with one piling rig. A second piling rig will follow in early 2020 . We are working from north to south. By mid-April 2020, the piling work will be complete. In the second quarter of 2020, we press about 100,000 m3 of sand to create a new piece of land/cofferdam.
We will be working with vibration work from December 9, 2019 to mid-April 2020. The work is close to downtown Terneuzen and the Wulpenbek and Knol cores and may cause noise and vibration nuisance. There will also be more than normal use of the driveway by work traffic on the Buitenhaven.
We closely monitor noise, vibration and groundwater levels. On our websitewww.nieuwesluisterneuzen.eu state more information.
By the end of 2022, the first ship will sail through the New Lock in Terneuzen. The New Lock will be as large as the locks in the Panama Canal, namely 427 meters long, 55 meters wide and 16.44 meters deep. Construction is in full swing. In addition to the work on the lock itself, subprojects are taking place, including to make room for the entrance to the New Lock.
