Scania's focus on the driver

  • R- and S-series cabs can be equipped with 270 mm extra length
  • Premium driver comfort for high-performance long-haul trucks
  • Also possibilities for other applications, such as accommodating crews, driving schools, salvage trucks with passenger seats, etc.
  • Produced exclusively by Scania subsidiary Laxå Special Vehicles as an ex-factory solution

"With the introduction of the CR23 and CS23, Scania is raising the bar for premium trucks even higher," said Stefan Dorski, Senior Vice President, Head of Scania Trucks. "We will integrate some of the features of our Scania CrewCab into our premium cabs in the R and S series. That way we will add generous space that brings additional comfort and allows for a multitude of creative solutions."

Scania's decision to offer extended cabs in small series is based on continued demand from various markets for cabs with extra space. The premium S-series has a flat floor and is already being praised for its generous space. With the extra length, it becomes something of a dream cab for drivers who travel long distances and spend many nights away from home. For example, they can have Scania's extendable bed, 100 cm wide, without ever having to retract it.

Scania creates the longer CR23 and CS23 cabs (with both Normal and High roofs) by adding the relevant parts from their modular toolbox. If seating for additional passengers is the goal, the Scania CrewCab is the main donor.

The addition of 27 centimeters to the initial length of 200 cm (measured from the pedals to the back wall) may sound insignificant, but it is not: we are talking about an increase of more than 13%, something that certainly makes a difference and opens the door to numerous interesting options.

"The most obvious benefit, of course, is for drivers who travel long distances. They are often looking for comfortable premium solutions," says Dorski. "They can use the extra space to generally create more room or choose a wider bed - or both. Other users are likely to be found in applications such as driving schools, defense trucks and salvage trucks. The latter will be able to transport passengers from stranded vehicles."

The additional space is created by adding existing cab components, which is possible thanks to Scania's renowned modular system. First deliveries to customers are scheduled for the third quarter of 2021.

"Scania's plan is to have these cabs certified with a WVTA* by the fourth quarter of this year," said Dorski. "Some countries will initially have these vehicles certified separately in their own markets."

Scania will offer premium extended R and S cabs, designed primarily for drivers who travel long distances and demand extra space. The S-series has a flat floor and with an increased length of 270 mm, the cab is so spacious that it is a dream cab for drivers who spend several nights away from home.
