Leica Geosystems digitizes construction with new machine control solutions

Leica MC1 for excavators and ConX connect offer intelligence for ground, civil and hydraulic engineering projects

Leica Geosystems, part of Hexagon, has introduced two new machine control solutions that contribute to the digital transformation of the construction industry: the Leica MC1 software for excavators and an upgrade of Leica ConX web interface.

Digital solutions are transforming the construction industry through improved efficiency and productivity. The latest machine control solutions from Leica Geosystems make immediately applicable intelligence available in the execution phase of a construction project and enable operators and machines to work smarter, safer and more effectively.

"The continued development of MC1 and ConX demonstrates our commitment to the construction professional and the sector to which we provide our services," saidJohan Arnberg, who is responsible for the ground, civil and hydraulic engineering portfolio of the Hexagon Geosystems division. "We realize that technology is bringing huge changes and how that affects our customers and their businesses. We support them on this journey with practical solutions that address their changing needs."

A digital platform for everyone
Launched more than two years ago, ConX is designed to create a connected ecosystem for construction sites, bringing together machinists, superintendents and project developers in one digital platform. All stakeholders can share and visualize site information, reference models and project data. Other machine control solutions connected to the interface can also receive and share information remotely.

In the latest extension of the successful platform, a new 3D environment is created using data collected on the construction site. ConX merges information from sensors to make real-time data available including automated analysis and visualization of project components such as excavation and fill volumes.

"Leica ConX helps transfer project files and tracks the machines from the office. When many subcontractors are working on a large construction site, it is important that everyone is up to date and working with the same and most recent files," explains Pontus Holmberg, superintendent at Skanska Sverige AB.

Leica MC1

Digital workflows for excavators
The popular MC1 software, which provides a common interface for Leica Geosystems' entire portfolio of machine control solutions, is now also available for excavators. This one-for-all software connects a basically infinite number of heavy machinery on the construction site, enabling machine control and automation of work on construction projects. The latest version of the software also enables work tool recognition for excavators, automatically detecting any attachment linked to the excavator. This reduces the chances of using the wrong bucket and excavating too much soil, greatly improving the efficiency and productivity of machine operators on construction sites.

"MC1 is much easier to use than other machine control solutions," explains Marco Pedersen of MP Enterprise A/S. "MC1 is easy to understand and there are many integrated help functions, which guide the operator through the program. The Create Model function, where you can use the bucket of the excavator to create simple and complex models on the spot, is very user-friendly and is a huge improvement to the software."

Both innovations are available for hands-on demonstrations this week at the Hexagon booth 137 in hall A2 at Bauma 2019 in Munich.
