New standardization improves safety of excavators

Engcon has been one of the driving forces behind the development of safety in the excavation industry since its founding 30 years ago. 2020 is no exception: starting Oct. 1, Engcon will offer the safe locking system QSC as a free standard on all swivels with an Engcon control system. This means replacing the current bucket lock control system under the rotary tilt with a standardized locking panel from Engcon.

Engcon's strategy is to improve the excavator operator's work through more effective, flexible and safe solutions. Thus, Engcon realizes smart solutions and offers them as standard. For example, the EC-Oil automatic quick-change system was previously offered free of charge. Engcon's next move is to put the safe locking system QSC under the rotary tilt attachment free of charge.

The current system for controlling the bucket lock under the pivot is being replaced by a standardized Engcon locking panel, with clear and illuminated symbols that guide the operator during engagement and disengagement. Thus, Engcon simplifies and standardizes the handling of the bucket lock, regardless of the make and model of the excavator. This will minimize the risk of equipment falling down or rocking.

"You can compare this to a gas and brake pedal that would always be in different places depending on the make of car. In short, when an operator changes excavators, he will recognize the main controls, minimizing the risk of dangerous mistakes," says Martin Engström, head of production at Engcon.

Unique safety feature that saves lives

In addition to the standardization of the locking function, it is not at all possible to unlock the bucket under the swivel tilt when the bucket is still in the raised position - a unique safety measure for the Engcon locking function

"This reduces the chance of the greatest risk: that a bucket or piece of equipment will come loose by mistake. This prevents both serious injuries and fatal accidents," says Martin Engström.

The QSC locking system, in combination with the Engcon Q-Safe quick coupler also features a visual and audible warning system. This warning system warns with light and sound signals if the bucket is incorrectly coupled. As an accessory, a safety function can also be ordered that limits the swinging movements of the boom to further increase safety.

"In short, we continue to standardize for maximum safety. We prevent unnecessary accidents caused by mistakes, stress or negligence. There are no additional expenses associated with this," concludes Martin Engström.

Information Framework

QSC meets all current and already known safety standards for safe quick couplings. QSC is encompassed by Engcon's "Non Accident Generation" safety concept and is included as standard on all swivels with the DC2 control system starting Oct. 1, 2020.
