Hyundai Material Handling is taking the next step in the electrification of the heavy-duty forklift segment. With the new 100B-X, 120B-X, 130B-X, 160B-X, and 180B-X Hyundai is introducing a fully electric series with lifting capacities ranging from 10 to 18 metric tons.

These machines are designed for applications where heavy-duty diesel forklifts are traditionally used. Examples include steel and aluminum, concrete and precast, wood processing, recycling, ports, terminals, and heavy industry. Hyundai has specifically designed the new B-X series to deliver performance comparable to that of forklifts with internal combustion engines.

Heavy-duty without diesel

The 100B-X, 120B-X, and 130B-X offer lifting capacities of 10, 12, and 13 metric tons, respectively, and are available with mast configurations up to approximately 7.5-meter lift height. Above those are the 160B-X and 180B-X, with lifting capacities of no less than 16 and 18 metric tons, respectively.

Under the hood, Hyundai has opted for high-voltage Li-ion technology (a 618V system that is unique in the market), combined with water-cooled Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors. According to Hyundai, these electric motors have an efficiency of approximately 90 to 95 percent and offer quick response and highly precise control.

The battery, motor, and electronics are also actively cooled. This thermal management helps keep the temperature under control during heavy-duty operation and fast charging, ensuring that the machine can continue to deliver its performance even during intensive use.

Made for work

Depending on the selected battery configuration, the operating time is approximately 6 to well over 10 hours without recharging. Opportunity charging is available, and Hyundai offers chargers with capacities of 20, 40, and 120 kW. Using the most powerful charger, a battery can be charged from 10 to 100 percent in about one to two hours, depending on the selected package.

That makes the series an attractive option for companies where a heavy-duty forklift must operate not just occasionally, but for many hours every day.

The machines are also designed for both indoor and outdoor use. Key electrical components include IP67-rated Hyundai has tested the trucks under various conditions, including water spray, driving through water, and at temperatures as low as -22 °C.

Add to that the benefits of electric driving: no local exhaust emissions, significantly less noise and vibration, and less maintenance on the powertrain.

Hyundai demonstrates this in practice

In a recent performance video, Hyundai demonstrates what it means by "heavy-duty electric." The vehicles are put through their paces under heavy loads, with their direct drive, acceleration, and control standing out in particular.

The goal is clear: not an electric forklift that’s interesting solely because of its powertrain, but a machine that can actually replace a diesel forklift in heavy-duty, day-to-day operations.
