LogiMAT 2025 in Stuttgart was all about smart warehouse automation. But how do you choose the solution that fits your process from the wide range on offer? Together with Andy Van Mieghem, managing director of Vanas Engineering, specialists in warehouse automation, we take a look behind the scenes of the latest innovations - and why data, not emotion, is the best advisor.
Automation does not stand still. At LogiMAT 2025, several suppliers presented their latest highlights. Vanas viewed them through integrator glasses where it is not the spectacle but the usability for customers that is decisive.
One system that really surprised Vanas was the Modula Flexibox. It is an advanced automatic storage system designed specifically for companies that need high picking performance without compromising on space utilization, speed and flexibility. Through a central elevator with telescopic fork, the system can pick and deliver up to nine totes simultaneously. This minimizes waiting times and allows multiple order lines to be processed in one cycle. "This vertical elevator takes performance to a new level: up to 180 totes per hour without the need for complex software configurations. The system is flexible, scalable and easy to integrate - a typical example of a solution that fits within our Solutions range," states Van Mieghem. With built-in sequencing, the Flexibox shows its strength in real-life order picking.
For larger volumes, rack climbers such as the HaiPick Climb proved to be the showpiece at the show. This storage system can handle up to 4,000 totes per hour from just 1,000 square feet. The robots move at lightning speed on a guide rail and provide error-free picks without aisles or complex installations. "They reduce error margins, increase picking efficiency and have a short learning curve - ideal for fast movers," says Van Mieghem. "It's a solution that is perfectly combinable with our WMS Software and logistics analytics (Software + Services)."
Vanas does not opt for "one size fits all. "We build hybrid warehouses that perfectly match a customer's product flow. We combine the right Solutions (hardware), with well thought-out Software (WMS/WCS), as well as strategic Services such as data analysis and (re-)engineering. This is how we guarantee scalable, future-proof projects. Automation for automation's sake is passé. You want to use technology where it makes a difference: at fast movers, for example. Other zones sometimes just require a classic approach," Van Mieghem explains. "Thanks to our modular integrations, customers can grow in phases."
New technology is inspiring, but Vanas remains realistic: "Without data-driven analysis, you can soon see the forest for the trees. Panic buying - through rapid growth or copy-paste from other companies - is rarely sustainable. That's why we always start with data analysis, and build the right total solution on that."
"Innovations like the Flexibox and shelf climbers show the direction of the future. But that future requires more than just technology. We think along from the first question, analyze the customer's process and integrate solutions that really work - tailored to the warehouse. Companies that want to know how their warehouse can be made smarter can always contact us. Our experts are ready for a consultation and are happy to explain the possibilities."
