Packaging for return transport (RTP) has evolved greatly since the advent of the metal roll container. The Loadhog Dolly Max roll container system is made of durable plastic and offers greater versatility, a safer user experience, greater maneuverability and better vehicle filling.
Many retailers are moving away from disposable packaging and looking to RTP for sustainable and cost-effective transportation of goods between their distribution centers and stores. While pallet loads are usually stretch-wrapped on automated wrappers and shipped from the DC, returning goods from stores requires time-consuming manual wrapping or packaging. Roll containers have overcome the disadvantages of pallets and boxes in the supply chain, but they have their own drawbacks: they are widely known to be difficult to handle and often have sharp metal contact points.
Launched in late 2023, Loadhog's Dolly Max Rolling Container System takes the humble rolling container to the next level. This modular system consists of the Dolly Max rolling deck, which can be used in conjunction with containers (for separated products), a folding sleeve (for bulk goods) or - with the addition of a shelf - a combination of the two in a hybrid solution for mixed goods. The cover attaches to the Dolly Max with two foot-operated locks, so staff do not have to bend down to secure it. It also has a fold-down door for easy access when picking orders in warehouses and store-level replenishment. With its mix-and-match design, this is the most versatile roll cage system on the market, giving users the flexibility to adapt to the fluctuating nature of goods within their supply chain. Loads can be secured with Loadhog's reusable Half Euro Pallet Cover, which features retractable straps and an integrated tensioning mechanism. Other accessories include a quick-release handle, a cover drawer for stacking containers and a tow hitch to connect dollies together in a train for easy maneuverability around warehouses and stores.
The lightweight Dolly Max is easy to maneuver and has an easily accessible one-button brake that is more ergonomic than the simple wheel brakes on roll cages. The ease with which the brake can be applied encourages use, which increases worker safety, and the innovative mechanism ensures that the unit remains stationary even on an inclined tailgate. The Dolly Max system offers 20% more vehicle fill compared to standard roll cages, reducing the carbon footprint. In addition, the recycled polypropylene system's carbon emissions are significantly lower than those of roll cages made of coated metals, making even more sustainability gains. Also, the tare weight and footprint of the Dolly Max system allow it to be used on all vehicle types, even smaller sprinter vans.
In addition to requiring no forklift or pump truck, the system can be coupled with AGVs (automated guided vehicles) for easy maneuverability around the DC. The system is designed for quick deconstruction to ensure efficient returns, with containers that can be nested together, sleeves that fold and the Dolly Max frame with casters for stable stacking. The return ratio is usually 3/1. Loadhog also offers labeling, tracking and branding options for all elements of the system to protect both packaging materials and goods. Branding naturally enhances the aesthetic in the store, especially if the packaging also serves as a product display.
The versatility of the Dolly Max led to a recent order for 10,000 units, which will be used for nationwide distribution of automotive products. Loadhog has provided RTP solutions to many major retail chains - including Harvey Nichols, Pets at Home, Sky, TK Maxx and Dunelm - and has considerable expertise in meeting the logistics needs of today's retailers.
